ArcGIS upgrades on Amazon Web Services

How you upgrade or apply patches to existing deployments depends on how you created the deployment and what software version you're using.

Note:

The original ArcGIS versions in the following sections refer to the version at which you created the deployment. For example, if you created an ArcGIS Enterprise deployment at 10.7.1 and upgraded it to 10.9.1, the original ArcGIS version for that deployment is 10.7.1. You must use the upgrade method for 10.7.1, not the upgrade method for 10.9.1.

Deployment created with Cloud Builder app

At 10.6.1 and earlier, the ArcGIS Server Cloud Builder on Amazon Web Services app was available to help you create ArcGIS Server sites and managed databases. Beginning with 10.7.1, a new Cloud Builder app was made available—ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services—that allows you to create ArcGIS Enterprise deployments and stand-alone or federated ArcGIS Server sites.

ToolOriginal ArcGIS versionUpgrade method

ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services app

11.1, 11.0, 10.9.1, or 10.9

If you did not alter the architecture of the deployment after creating it, use the ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services app to upgrade.

If you altered the deployment's architecture after creating it, upgrade in the same way you would upgrade on-premises software. See the upgrade topics for each component to upgrade them.

ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services app

10.8.1 or 10.8

Upgrade in the same way you would upgrade on-premises software or use ArcGIS Chef cookbooks provided by Esri to upgrade.

ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Amazon Web Services app

10.7.1

Upgrade the site the same way you would upgrade on-premises software.

ArcGIS Server Cloud Builder on Amazon Web Services

10.6.1 or earlier

Upgrade the site the same way you would upgrade on-premises software. See Upgrade ArcGIS Server for instructions.

Deployment created with ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder Command Line Interface for Amazon Web Services

ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder Command Line Interface for Amazon Web Services was introduced with ArcGIS Enterprise 10.7. You can use it to create ArcGIS Enterprise deployments and stand-alone or federated ArcGIS Server sites.

Original ArcGIS versionUpgrade method

11.1, 11.0, 10.9.1, or 10.9

If you did not alter the architecture of the deployment after creating it, use Cloud Builder or a CloudFormation template provided by Esri to upgrade.

10.8.1 or 10.8

Upgrade the site the same way you would upgrade on-premises software or use ArcGIS Chef cookbooks provided by Esri to upgrade.

10.7.1, 10.7, or any version if you altered the architecture (for example, you changed the Elastic IP address, added a load balancer, or added an Elastic Block Storage volume) after deploying using a CloudFormation template.

Upgrade the site the same way you would upgrade on-premises software. See the upgrade topics for each component to upgrade them.

Deployment created with an Esri sample CloudFormation template

Esri began providing sample AWS CloudFormation templates with ArcGIS 10.3.1. Over time, templates have been added that allow you to create many types of deployments.

Original ArcGIS versionUpgrade method

11.1, 11.0, 10.9.1, or 10.9

If you did not alter the architecture of the deployment after creating it, you can use a 10.9 CloudFormation template provided by Esri to upgrade.

10.8.1 or 10.8

Upgrade the site the same way you would upgrade on-premises software or use ArcGIS Chef cookbooks provided by Esri to upgrade.

10.7.1 or earlier or any version if you altered the architecture (for example, you changed the Elastic IP address, added a load balancer, or added an Elastic Block Storage volume) after deploying using a CloudFormation template.

Upgrade the deployment the same way you would upgrade on-premises software. See the upgrade topics for each component to upgrade them.

Deployment created with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Management Console

If you used AWS Management Console to create your deployment, upgrade the software the same way you would upgrade on-premises software. See the following upgrade topics to upgrade each component:

ArcGIS GeoEvent Server upgrades

No matter what method you use to upgrade an ArcGIS GeoEvent Server site to 11.2, you must do the following:

Single machine ArcGIS Notebook Server site upgrades

No matter what method you use to upgrade a single machine ArcGIS Notebook Server site (11.1 and earlier) to 11.2, you must move the workspace directory before you upgrade. See the ArcGIS Notebook Server (Linux) installation guide for instructions.

Operating systems

Before you upgrade to 11.2, ensure the operating system versions on the Amazon EC2 machines used by your deployment are supported with ArcGIS Enterprise 11.2 on AWS. If they are not, you must upgrade the operating system before you upgrade the ArcGIS Enterprise components.

Apply patches

A patch notification tool (patchnotification) is included with ArcGIS software. It is in the tools directory of each ArcGIS component's installation directory. The 10.6.1 and later patch notification tool lists and installs the patches. However, for 10.6.1, 10.7.x, and 10.8 deployments, you must install patches one at a time. On 10.8.1 or later deployments, you can apply patches in bulk when components are installed on the same Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance.

Always read patch descriptions before applying them. You can find these on the Downloads page of the Esri support website.

Create backup files before upgrading

Before you upgrade an ArcGIS Enterprise deployment or apply patches, use the webgisdr tool installed with Portal for ArcGIS to create a backup of the ArcGIS Enterprise components. This backup allows you to restore your deployment using the same URLs if you encounter issues that require you to revert to your old deployment.

Note:

If you have a spatiotemporal big data store in your deployment, use the ArcGIS Data Store backupdatastore utility to create a backup of it, as it is not included in the backup created by the webgisdr tool.

Before you upgrade a stand-alone ArcGIS Server site, create a backup of the site.
